Some Common Plants of Upper Newport Bay

Yerba Mansa  (Anemopsis californica)
Plant: Perennial herb with many hollow hairy stems reaching 2 feet tall.  Grows in wet places, sometimes alkaline.
Flowers: Many white about 1/4 inch long on cone shaped spikes 3/8 to 1 1/2 inches long with 6 white petal-like bracts, aging to red.
Leaf: Mostly at lower part of stems, broad, about 5 inches long on long stems.
Flowering period:   March to September
Use by Indians:  Dried roots used for aches and pains.
