Some Common Plants of Upper Newport Bay

Willow Smartweed  (Polygonum lapathifolium)
Plant: Annual, stems simple or branched, usually swollen at nodes, grows to 9 feet.  Found near fresh water.
Flowers: In slender spikes 3/8 to 2-1/4 inches long, often bent over, white, pink or purplish.
Leaf: Lance shaped, 2 to 8 inches long.
Flowering period:   July to October
