Some Common Plants of Upper Newport Bay

Wild Cucumber  (Marah macrocarpus)
Plant: Perennial herb that dies back in the summer.  Usually in December the large woody root sends up rapidly growing shoots.
Flowers: Male and female separate but on same plant.  Male flowers in racemes, female solitary.
Fruit: Large seeds in a 5 inch long, spiny, ovoid pod, no part of which is edible.
Leaf/stem: Lobed, not hairy. Tendrils are opposite the leaves. The stems are grooved.
Flowering period:   January to April
