Some Common Plants of Upper Newport Bay

Tansy Mustard  (Descurainia pinnata)
Plant:  Branching annual 3/4 to 2 feet tall, Single stem with short branches. 
Flowers: Greenish yellow petals.
Seed Pod: On stems at right angles to the main stem. 
Leaf: Alternate on stems, lower leaves are 1 to 3 1/2 inches long.
Flowering period:   March to June
Use by Indians:  The small red seeds were gathered,
ground into flower and made into mush.
The flower had a peppery taste.
