Some Common Plants of Upper Newport Bay

Slender Tarweed,  Fascicled Tarweed  (Hemizonia fasciculata)
Plant: Annual erect mostly branching from above the middle, 8 to 40 inches high, aromatic.  Common.
Flowers: Yellow radiate flower heads in dense clusters of 3 to many, 5 ray flowers and 6 disk flowers.
Leaf:  Alternate on the stems. Lower leaves linear, saw toothed, 1 to 6 inches long, mostly dried up by the time the plant is in flower. Upper leaves small, smooth edged.
Flowering period:   May through September
Use by Indians:  For food in the time of hunger.
