Some Common Plants of Upper Newport Bay

Showy Penstemon  (Penstemon spectabilis)
Plant: Perennial herb, erect with several stems from the base. 
Flowers: In long compound racemes, paired in upper leaf axils, lavender-purple with white inside, 1 to 1-1/4 inch long.


Leaf: Opposite of stems, lower are broadly lance shaped, coarsely toothed, 3/4 to 4 inches long, upper leaves in pairs united about the stems.
Flowering period:   April to June
