California Sagebrush  (Artemisia californica)
Plant: Woody shrub, freely branched, stout. light gray-green, aromatic to smell, 5 to 8 feet tall.  Common.
Flowers: Minute flower heads in compound racemes. 
Leaf: Alternate, clustered on branches, 3/8 to 2 inches long. divided into narrow segments.  Covered with minute, light gray hairs.
Flowering period:   August to December
Use by Indians:  Leaves were rubbed on the body when hunting
to mask the hunter's scent from the animal.
Lined food storage baskets to keep away insects.  Medicine for menstruation, childbirth and postnatal problems.
