Some Common Plants of Upper Newport Bay

Miner's Lettuce  (Claytonia perfoliata)
Plant: A succulent annual found in early spring, branching from the base, a few inches to a foot tall.  Shoots and leaves are used as greens by some people.
Flowers: Small, white to pink on the stem above the leaf, petals 1/8 to 3/16 inches long.
Leaf: Two kinds of leaves, lower leaves have long leaf stems and the upper leaves form a circular disk around the stem, 3/8 to 3 1/4 inches across.
Flowering period:   February to May
Use by Indians:  Eaten fresh or cooked.
Can be found here: Back Bay Dr. near Shellmaker Island.
