Some Common Plants of Upper Newport Bay

Horseweed, Mare's Tail  (Conyza canadensis)
Plant: Annual, erect, from taproots,  to seven feet tall with many branches on the upper part of the plant. 
Flowers: Numerous white flower heads at ends of branches. 
Leaf: Alternate on stems, linear leaves that taper at both ends,  with toothed edges. Lower leaves wither before flowering.  Seedlings develop a basal rosette of egg shaped leaves with toothed edges.
Flowering period:   June to September
Use by Indian:
As an astringent to stop bleeding and as a treatment for diarrhea.  Tea from dried leaves treated bronchitis.
