Some Common Plants of Upper Newport Bay

Sweet Fennel  (Foeniculum vulgare)
Plant: This plant gives off a licorice smell when handled.  Care must be taken not to confuse Sweet Fennel with Poison Hemlock, which is extremely poisonous, since they resemble each other when not in bloom.  Poison Hemlock does not smell of licorice, has purple blotches on the stems and has white flowers.
Flowers: This member of the carrot family has umbrella-shaped clusters of bright, lemon-yellow flowers.
Leaf and Stem: finely divided, thread-like leaves which give off a licorice smell when handled.
Flowering period:  May to September
Use by Spanish Californians: It was spread on the mission floors to give a pleasant scent when bruised by the feet of the congregation.
