Some Common Plants of  Upper Newport Bay

Curly Dock  (Rumex crispus)
Plant:  A perennial with a stout stem from 1 1/2 to 4 feet tall.  In its first year it forms a dense rosette of bluish-green leaves around a stout taproot.
Flowers:  The dense inflorescence is 1 to 2 feet long, leafless, and rose-colored when fruiting.  The inner sepals are heart shaped.
Leaf: The curly, wavy leaves are 3 to 10 inches long on little stalks 1 to 2 inches long. 
Flowering period:   March to June
