Plant: Annual, stout, branching, rough with stiff hairs, 1 to
8 feet tall.

Flowers: Large and showy flower heads on terminal
stems. Disk flowers are purplish-brown, ray flowers are yellow, 2
to 6 inches across.

Leaf: Lower leaves are opposite on stems, egg shaped, saw
toothed edges, 6 inches or longer on long stems, rough and hairy.

Use by Indians: |
Seeds were used for food, yellow dye was extracted
from ray flowers.
