Some Common Plants of Upper Newport Bay

Coast Cholla  (Opuntia prolifera)
Plant: Erect, bushy and covered with spines.  Grows to 6 feet tall, branching several times.  Dislodging of joints spread by animals is principle method of reproduction.
Flowers: Rose to red-purple
Leaf: Small, fleshy, appear on new growth and fall off in 2 to 3 months.
Fruit: Green, globe shaped about 1 inch in diameter.
Flowering period:   April to June
Use by Indians:  Fruits and buds were eaten.
Can be found here: North of Bicycle Trail east of  Interpretive Center, on the face of the West Bluffs.  Big Canyon
