Some Common Plants of Upper Newport Bay

Chia  (Salvia columbariae)
Plant: Annual, unbranched or branching near the base, 4 to 20 inches tall.
Flowers: In head like clusters on stalks, dark blue.
Leaf: Opposite, mostly at the base, downy, 3/4 to 4 inches long on stems as long as the blades.
Flowering period:   March to June
Use by Indians:  Seeds were made into a mush or beverage.
