Some Common Plants of Upper Newport Bay

California Everlasting   (Gnaphalium californicum)
Plant: Biennial herb, somewhat stout, erect, branching toward the top.  Leafy, green, sticky, smells of maple sugar, 16 to 32 inches tall.
Flowers: Flower heads in a large terminal cluster.
Leaf: Oblong, alternating on the stems, 1-1/2 to 4 inches long.  Upper leaves reduced, all leaves hairy, sticky and green on both sides.  No leaf stems.
Flowering period:   January to July
Use by Indians:  Medicine for lung and intestine troubles, mouth sores and as a poultice for wounds.
