Some Common Plants of Upper Newport Bay

Bush Mallow  (Malacothamnus fasciculatus)
Plant: Open-branching shrub, 3 to 15 feet tall, with sparsely leaved branches, covered with soft hairs.
Flowers: Lavender in clusters in axils of upper leaves, 1 to 1-1/2 inches across.
Leaf: Oval, shallowly lobed with scalloped edges, 3/4 to 1-1/2 inches long, covered with grayish hairs below, less so above.
Flowering period:   April to September
Use by Indians:  Outer stem fibers used to make twine.
