Some Common Plants of Upper Newport Bay

Bulrush  (Scirpus ssp.)
Plant: Grass-like herb or annuals with solid stems, rhizomes and fibrous roots, growing to 5 feet. 
Flowers: The inflorescence contains several drooping branches of flower clusters called spikelets.
Leaf: Long narrow stalks are triangular in cross-section.
Flowering period:  June to September
Use by Indians: Stems were used in building boats and houses,
weaving mats and skirts, making twine, roots
were ground into flour and seeds were eaten.
