Plant: Tap rooted biennial with spiny winged stems growing 2 to 5 feet tall. Young plants develop as a rosette.  Invasive
Flowers: Flower heads tipped with prickles, purple flowers.
Leaf: Arranged alternately on the stem and end in  long sharp spines. Upper surfaces have short prickles, underside cottony.
Flowering period:   June to September
