Some Common Plants of Upper Newport Bay

Bladderpod (Isomeris arborea)
Plant:  A shrub from 3 to 10 feet tall, widely branched with hard, yellow wood and a characteristic disagreeable smell to the leaf and blossom. Common
Flowers: The flowers are yellow and are grouped in bunches at the ends of the branches.
Seeds: The seed pod is a large prominent capsule 1 to 2 inches long, drooping on long stalks, giving the plant its common name.
Leaf: The leaves are narrow, 1/2 to 1-3/8 inch long and 1/4 as wide with a sharp point. They are arranged in threes alternating on each side of the stem.
Flowering period:   January to December
Use by Indians:  Flowers and plump seed pods were cooked with hot stones and eaten.
