Some Common Plants of Upper Newport Bay

Bedstraw  (Galium aparine)
Plant: Annual with weak stems from 5 to 50 inches long.  Used as stuffing for mattresses from which the name comes.  Introduced from Europe.
Flowers: Small, greenish-white arising from the leaf axils.  Fruit  consists of 2 roundish pods joined in the middle and covered with hooked hairs.
Leaf: Whorls of 6 to 8 around square stem, thin, 1/2 to 1 1/2 inches long with stiff hairs.
Flowering period:   March to July
