Hands-on Restoration
Hands-on restoration activities are a great opportunity for the public to be involved in a meaningful at here at the Bay without making any long-term volunteer commitment. Service learning hours are available and groups are welcome. These activities are organized by the California Coastal Commission and OC Parks.

California Coastal Commission

The California Coastal Commission chose Upper Newport Bay (UNB) as the development site for an exciting new Community-Based Restoration and Education Program that will eventually provide an avenue for people to participate in a very local and hands-on way to protect and restore coastal resources throughout California. A native plant nursery has been set up at the Back Bay Science Center, and a High School Activity Guide for UNB have been published. For more information, please visit http://www.coastal.ca.gov/publiced/UNBweb/restore.html

The public is invited to join trained staff in the following community-based activities:

ROOTS Days – One Saturday per month from 9:00 a.m. - noon.

Winter dates are Dec. 13, Jan. 24, Feb. 26

Be a vital part of the restoration process. On one Saturday per month, join a large group of volunteers to remove invasive plants, install native plants, learn about the history of UNB and, of course have fun. These events take place at various locations at UNB. All ages are welcome. Under 14 must be accompanied by an adult. Service learning hours available. reveg.jpg (14212 bytes)
Steward Days Every Wednesday from 9:00 - 11:00 a.m.

For a more intimate experience, join a dedicated group of volunteers who tend to the cultivation of native plants for our restoration activities. Tasks on these days vary from collecting seeds to monitoring and maintaining previously planted sites. These events take place at various locations at UNB. All ages are welcome. Under 14 must be accompanied by an adult. Service learning hours available.

For information or to reserve your place for either activity,  please contact Matt Yurko, Restoration Education Coordinator at (949) 640-0286 or myurko@coastal.ca.gov. A signed waiver is needed for each participant. For those under 18, this must be signed by a parent or guardian. To help us, please download, complete and sign the CCC Waiver and bring to the event.
