Hands-on Restoration
The primary role of the Naturalists is to educate the public about the wonders of Upper Newport Bay. We are fortunate that this can be done  in so many ways and at so many locations in and around the Bay.
  • Structured hands-on school programs aligned with state standards that allow students to learn the importance of Upper Newport Bay and the wetlands in general.
  • Guided water tours that allow the public to enjoy and find out about the Bay.
  • Leisurely guided walking tours that allow young and old alike to experience the sights and sounds of nature.
  • Shark camps and other marine programs that include catch and release of fish and other marine creatures.
  • Scout programs and family programs that are fun for everyone.
  • Community-based restoration programs.
Hands-on learning at the Marine Studies Center

In addition to education programs and special events here at the Bay, outreach is performed to local schools and community events. The Back Bay Science Center's Sharkmobile is a key part of this outreach program. In-class curricula, such as the California Coastal Commission's Our Wetland Our World program, are also available for use by middle and high schools.
