The Newport Bay Naturalists and Friends are very
excited about the sixth biennual “Paint Back Bay” event that the
Southern California Plein Air Painters Association (www.socalpapa.com)
will be holding at Upper Newport Bay in
collaboration with the Naturalists, Newport Beach Arts Foundation
and Orange County Parks. More than 60 artists are expected to submit plein air paintings for jurying and paint
“The Many Moods of the Back Bay” around the entire
Newport Bay during July.
On Saturday and Sunday, July 24 and 25 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm
there will be a free public exhibition at the Interpretive Center at
which the original artwork will be sold. See
Map. The Naturalists will receive 35% of the receipts. Art displayed will include paintings of both the
Back Bay and other local scenes.
| As part of the 2008 event, there was a
separate competition to select a plein air painting that will be
recreated at mural size as part of a stunning set of three new
exhibits at Interpretive Center.

In conjunction with this Fine Art Show and Sale there will
also be an exhibition of plein air paintings from the children’s
arts program. Free painting classes will be
held for ages 6-15 at the Interpretive Center in early July.
